Abstract

885,232. Photo-mechanical engraved plates. VOKES, L. G. April 10, 1958 [April 16, 1957; Nov. I, 1957], Nos. 12452/57 and 34240/57. Class 98(2). A mild steel or iron plate is coated with a hardenable light-sensitive composition, exposed in areas which are not to be engraved, developed, and etched through the resist so obtained, the plate being hardened before it is coated or after it is etched, or the etched face of the plate being plated with chromium after etching. In Example 1 a mild steel die blank is cleaned, where coated with bichromated albumen or polyvinyl alcohol, exposed, washed, heated to harden the resist, etched as with ferric chloride, nitric acid or a mixture of this with sulphuric acid, with treatment to avoid undercutting if necessary, after which the resist is removed and the plate carburised or case hardened. In a second example a mild steel plate is case hardened and then given a similar treatment of coating, exposing, washing, heating and etching. The second Provisional Specification indicates the use of electrolytical etching procedure.
