A surface sensitive to electromagnetic vibrations is exposed to a pattern of such and simultaneously to a solvent which dissolves the surface in proportion to the intensity of such vibrations, the material and the solvent being such that differential solution of the material in the solvent occurs during exposure in dependence on the intensity of the radiations. The material of the surface may be a photo-conductor e.g. selenium, or amorphous sulphur, or rubber and the solvent in the case of selenium and sulphur may be perchlorethylene, trichlorethylene, or carbon bisulphide, and in the case of rubber may be cyclohexane. The surface may be formed on a zinc plate which, after exposure, may be etched and used as a printing block.
