962,770. Ignition systems; timing ignition. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 8, 1962 [March 13, 1961; June 16, 1961], No. 8938/62. Heading FIB. [Also in Division H2] The distributer housing of an internal combustion engine includes a permanent magnet pulse generator, which is connected to an external electrical circuit (not shown), instead of the usual contact breaker for producing the H.T. supply to the sparking plugs. Shaft 12 is driven from the cam-shaft of the engine through gear 18 and is journalled in sleeve bearings 14, 16 in body 10, and rotates plate 46 which drives plate 56 through springs 66, 68 as in a normal centrifugal ignition advance mechanism. Plate 56 is secured to bush 48 which can rotate around the shaft 12 and carries the rotating magnet assembly which consists of toothed pole wheels 52, 54 separated by permanent magnet 50. The rotating poles co-operate with a stationary U-shaped armature 26 mounted on a timer plate 20 so that when each pole tooth passes an armature tooth a voltage pulse is induced in coil 28 by the change in reluctance of the magnetic circuit. The timer plate may be connected to a known vacuum control unit 32 to change the timing of the voltage pulse in accordance with engine load. The voltage pulse is used in an electric circuit, which may include transistors, to apply current to the primary of a coil and thus produce the H.T. supply which is distributed by rotor arm 76 to the sparking plugs in the normal way. In modifications various configurations of rotating magnet and co-operating armature are employed, with the centrifugal advance assembly being mounted either above or below the magnet assembly and different shaped housings are used.
