Abstract
904,687. Ignition systems. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 21, 1961 [June 23, 1960], No. 22420/61. Class 7(4) In an ignition system the flow of current from an electric power source 10 to the primary 64 or 68 of an ignition coil is controlled by first and second transistors 1 connected with the power source so that when one transistor is substantially fully conductive the other is substantially. fully non-conductive, one of the transistors 30 being connected between the power source and the primary of the ignition coil and the other 42 being connected with a device 80 for controlling its conduction in synchronism with the operation of the engine. The magnet assembly 80 as it rotates induces voltages in the coils 84, 86, 88 and 90, the coils 84, 88 being used in starting the engine to provide a somewhat retarded spark and coils 86 and 90 being used when the engine is running to give an advanced spark as compared with that from coils 84 and 88. An embodiment employing a single ignition coil, associated with a distributer is described.
