Abstract

1,023,827. Advancing mine roof supports. DOWTY MINING EQUIPMENT Ltd. June 12, 1964 [June 21, 1963], No. 24829/63. Heading F1P. In a roof support assembly comprising a series of fluid pressure operated roof supports advanceable in a predetermined sequence, at least some of the supports have associated therewith first type and/or second type signalling means which during normal sequential advance produces the two types of signal in a predetermined intermingled order, but during faulty advance produces the two types of signal in an incorrect order. A device, Fig. 2 (not shown), for checking the receipt of a fluid pressure signal from each support as it advances and an electrical signal from every fourth support as it advances is provided. The pressure signal is preferably caused by the variation in pressure in the supply line to the supports, and the electrical signal is caused by the full advance of every fourth support. In operation, a pressure signal is received by the device through a conduit 10 each time a support advances, whereby a spring 11 moves a piston rod 19 to rotate an electrical contact 14 through 90 degrees over a disc 15 carrying an arcuate contact 16. During normal advance the contact 14 is in a position D when the electrical signal from the fourt support is received. The electrical signal closes a switch 31 to energize a relay coil 28 to close contacts 17, 18 but no circuit is made through the arcuate contact 16. If a roof support fails to send a pressure signal the contact 14 will be at position C when the switch 31 closes and a circuit is made through the arcuate contact 16. The circuit energizes a relay coil 22 to close contacts 23, 24 and operate an audible warning device 26 and energize a hold on coil 25.
