Abstract

960,877. Orthopaedic footwear. SCHOLL MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Aug. 30, 1960 [Sept. 11, 1959], No. 29902/60. Heading A3B. An inner sole member 8 is provided with a set compound 15 having its upper surface shaped to the contour of the plantar surface of a human foot, the sole member being disposed within the shoe and shaped to form a moulding pan for the compound during manufacture of the shoe. A patient's bare foot is placed on the chalk dusted upper surface of the inner sole member 8 and an impression taken. The parts of the sole member indicating deformities are then relieved by grinding so that it accommodates the irregularities in the patient's foot, the inner sole member 8 being made of compressed cork. A sheet of aluminium foil 14 Fig. 6 or equivalent is cemented to this upper face and an overlap 20 is preferably pressed round the periphery of the inner shoe member. A compound of cork flour, ground cork, wood flour or fine sawdust and ground rubber is mixed and is applied on top of the aluminium sheet, the compound being subsequently covered with a thin impervious plastic film 21. The covered inner sole member is then placed on the floor and provided with a temporary wedge 23 of, for example, sponge rubber. The patient's foot is placed on the plastic film as shown in Fig. 6 and a downward pressure is applied to the knee when the patient is in a sitting position. The patient then stands and simulates a walking step by flexing his knees. The sole member and the film 21 is then removed and the compound allowed to partially dry, the edge 20 of the foil 14 being subsequently trimmed off. The compound is then covered with another thin film and the inner sole member replaced in the shoe so that the patient may wear them to perfect the impression. The thin film is subsequently removed and a cover of thin leather or monks cloth is cemented over the set compound. Where the inner sole member is used in a sandal it may become part thereof, the aluminium foil being preferably eliminated. The ankle portion 10 Fig. 3 of the shoe upper may be cut lower on the outer side of the shoe and the shoe is provided with an attached insole 5 a filler 6 a mid sole 3 and an outsole 1.
