A time delay switch has a single switch actuating member movable by hand in either direction against a spring to an extent dependent on the time lag required, the mechanism incorporating an escapement having a one-way clutch such that the manual actuation is free of the escapement but the return of the mechanism to the zero (centre) position is under control of the escapement. The last portion of movement to the zero position is not under control of the escapement and takes place quickly to operate the actuated switch. In a preferred embodiment mutilated gear-wheels are used to free the final portion of the movement from the escapement and the one-way clutch action is provided by allowing a pinion engaging with the mutilated gear to ratchet over its teeth. The mechanism is illustrated in the Specification in exploded form.
