Abstract

960,156. Controlling clutches; disc brakes. A. FERRANTI. Oct. 24, 1960, No. 36345/60. Headings F2E and F2L. A driven clutch disc 20 fast with a hub 16 keyed for axial movement upon a driven shaft C is normally biased by springs 18 to engage with a friction lining 22 upon the rotor B of a driving electric motor in a press &c., disengagement being effected by rotation of a ring 42 containing several multiple roller assemblies 34, 36, 38, 38<SP>1</SP> engaging between cam surfaces 32 upon a fixed plate 30 and plane surfaces upon a ring 28 adjustably threaded upon the hub 16, the rollers riding up the cam surfaces to slide the hub 16 leftwards of the Figure and the self-energizing action being such that the driven clutch 20 is then engaged with a fixed brake ring 25. Each multiple roller assembly comprises a central roller 34 of relatively small size engaging only with the associated cam 32 on the fixed plate 30, and two larger diameter rollers 38, 38<SP>1</SP> freely mounted at each side of the roller 34 on pins 36 integral therewith and engaging only the ring 28. When the clutch disc 20 is engaged with the driving rotor B, the spacing between the fixed plate 30 and the ring 28 is such that the rollers lie entirely freely between them. When the ring 42 containing the multiple roller assemblies is first turned, the inner rollers 34 engage with the cams 32 and the outer rollers 38, 38<SP>1</SP> engage with the ring 28. The direction of rotation of the driven clutch disc 20, the hub 16 and the ring 28 is such that the rollers 34 are then pushed up the cams 32 and the driven clutch disc 20 engages the fixed brake ring 25. To permit this self-energizing action, the multiple roller assemblies 34, 36, 38, 38<SP>1</SP> may be mounted with some lost-motion within their control ring 42. A worm 46, driven by a separate control electric motor meshes worm teeth formed around the periphery of the roller control ring 42. Disengagement is effected when the press &c. has almost completed each of its operating cycles by means of a switch in the circuit of the control electric motor.
