960,147. Surgical needles. ETHICON Inc. March 29, 1963 [March 29, 1962], No. 12558/63. Heading D1G. A surgical needle has at least one flattened area between the point and the end to which the suture is attached, with at least one longitudinal rib positioned on at least one flattened surface. As shown, a curved needle of triangular cross-section has three longitudinal ribs 20 formed on the side 19 of the needle disposed parallel to the axis of curvature of the needle. The ribs 20 and the edge 13 of the needle disposed opposite to side 19 are gripped by the serrations 76, 78 of the respective jaws 72, 74, of the needle holder to prevent turning of the needle in said jaws during a suturing operation. A needle of round cross section is formed with two parallel flat surfaces each of which is provided with from one to three longitudinal ribs in accordance with the diameter of the needle.
