Abstract

10 to 40 parts by weight of trimellitic anhydride are dissolved or dispersed in 90 to 60 parts of liquid epoxy resin and the mixture is cured at an elevated temperature below 300 DEG C. Commercial trimellitic anhydride may contain impurities which reduce the transparency of the cured resin. This difficulty may be overcome by adding 0.02-0.4% by weight of an aromatic amine, preferably a secondary amine, to the mixture of epoxy resin and anhydride. Preferably the amine is added to the epoxy resin before the anhydride. In examples an epoxy resin from bisphenol A and epichlorhydrin was cured with commercial trimellitic anhydride with and without an amine, and with pure trimellitic anhydride. Comparative experiments were performed with trimellitic acid, phthalic anhydride and pyromellitic di-anhydride. Amines used in the examples were diphenylamine, aniline and p,p1-methylene dianiline.
