Abstract

Casting resins are prepared by mixing (1) a mixed unsaturated polyester resin; (2) a polymerizable vinyl monomer miscible with (1) and (4), e.g. styrene; (3) an organic peroxy compound, e.g. tert.-butyl perbenzoate; (4) an epoxy resin which is liquid at ordinary temperatures; and (5) an aromatic diamine. (1) may be derived from an a -b -unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, e.g. maleic anhydride, 50 to 2 mols. per mol. of unsaturated acid of a saturated dicarboxylic acid, e.g. adipic acid, and a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. propylene glycol, and preferably contains an inhibiter, e.g. quinone or tert.-butyl catechol. (4) may be of the type described in Specifications 772,289 and 766,817. (5) may be a phenylene diamine, tolylene diamine, naphthylene diamine, diaminodiphenyl methane, e.g. 4,41-diamino diphenyl methane, or benzidine. Preferably component (5) is dissolved in (1) and (2) and component (3) in (4) and the two solutions then mixed. Fillers, e.g. quartz, silica, mica and talc, may be added and the compositions used in casting miniature transformers and chokes.
