Abstract

A polishing fabric comprises a supporting fabric, an intermediate layer and a phenolic resin-bonded abrasive grain layer, the intermediate layer comprising a mixture of, (a) an epoxy resin based on bis-phenol A, and (b) at least one epoxy resin containing terminal epoxy groups and based on bis-phenol A, which resin has been internally plasticized, by reaction with castor oil in the presence of a Lewis acid and (c) a hardener. The epoxide resins may be formed by reacting bis-phenol A with epichlorhydrin or dichlorhydrin in alkaline medium and have epoxy equivalents of between 180 and 500 and viscosities of from 10,000 to 60,000 cp. at 25 DEG C. Liquid resins may be mixed with butylglycidyl ether, phenol-glycidyl ether, cresylglycidyl ether and styrene oxide. The mixtures may have viscosities of between 400 and 5000 cp. The plasticized component (b) may be prepared by the reaction of bis-phenol A diglycidyl ether with castor oil in molar ratio of from 1:0.25 to 1:0.3. There may be from 10 parts by weight of (a) to 90 parts by weight of (b) to 90 parts of (a) to 10 parts of (b). The hardners may be aliphatic and aromatic polyamines and anhydrides, e.g. metaphenylenediamine, methylene-dianiline and diamino-diphenylsulphone.
