Abstract

857,178. Blasting devices. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. June 25,1959 [June 27, 1958]. No. 21893/59. Class 9(1). A delay element 2, for propagating explosion, comprises a rigid tubular element 5 having at least two perforations 6 at different positions along its length, to prevent collapse as the result of unequal internal and external pressures, one perforation being near the upper end thereof, and also a delay producing unit 7, and connecting means at each end for an explosive charge, or another such delay element. The delay unit 7 comprises a closely folded length of low energy connecting cord, each end of which is capped by a metal shell 8 containing an initiating explosive, and is retained on the end of the cord by a peripheral crimp 9. The shell 8 is held adjacent an initiating charge (not shown) in the internally threaded end B, and a priming charge 11 of a pressed high-velocity detonating explosive in the externally threaded end B<SP>1</SP>.
