Abstract
865,756. Blasting devices. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Dec. 22, 1959 [Dec. 29, 1958], No. 43604/59. Class 9(1) A connecting device comprises a tubular metal shell 1, closed at one end and receiving a detonating explosive 10, a primer 9, and a length of explosive connecting cord 7, and which is inserted in a sleeve 2 that has opposed apertures 3 through which a length of explosive connecting cord 6, which contains 40-120 grains/ft. (8À3-24À8 gr./ metre) of high explosive, can be passed, and which has a smaller internal diameter at its other end 4 equal to that of the shell. The end 4 of the sleeve receives another explosive connecting cord 5, which contains a core 16 surrounded by a metal sheath 17 with a non- metallic countering 18 around the sheath. The explosive 10 and the cords 5, 6, 7 each have an explosive core of e.g. pentaerythritol tetranitrate, cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine, lead azide, picryl sulphone, and the primer is composed of e.g. lead azide, diazodinitrophenol, mercury fulminate. In another form, inwardly directed prongs on the sleeve assist retention of the cord, and a delay element composed of a mixture of boron and red lead, and an open-ended metal capsule having a central aperture to provide resistance to electrostatic discharges, are disposed between the primer 9 and the cord 7.
