Abstract

A granular carbon product having a volatile matter content between 0 and 6% and a particle size above 1/8 inch diameter is produced from raw petroleum coke having a volatile matter content between 9 and 20% and a particle size such that at least 40% passes through a 100 mesh screen (U.S. Standard) and substantially all the particles pass through an 8 mesh screen by mixing these particles with a binder system comprising water and a bonding material compatible with water, agglomerating into pellets above 1/8 inch diameter, and devolatilizing in a substantially non-oxidizing atmosphere at between 900 DEG and 2000 DEG F. until their volatile matter content is between 0 and 6%. The raw coke may be first crushed and milled to form particles of the required size and moisture then removed. The binder system may comprise starch and water, asphalt emulsions, clay emulsions, mixtures of water with molasses or with calcium ligno sulphonates. If the raw petroleum coke has some particles with a diameter above 1/8 inch and some with less tha 1/8 inch, these may be separated, the finer ones being milled until at least 40% pass through a 100 mesh screen, mixing with a binder system, and agglomerating (as above) mixing with the larger size particles and devolatilizing.
