Abstract
1,202,544. Granular carbon. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP. 19 Sept., 1967, No. 42691/67. Heading CIA. [Also in Division C5] Granular carbon having a volatile matter content between 0 and 6% by weight and a particle diameter above # inch is produced by (A) mixing a total of 100 parts by weight of a poorly fusing (i.e. incapable of forming an autogenously developed permanent bond between its particles) carbonaceous material, selected from delayed cokes, raw or calcined petroleum coke, raw or calcined fluid petroleum coke, anthracite coal, coke from bituminous coal, pitch coke and mixtures thereof, having a particle size such that at least 40% of the particles pass through a 100 mesh Tyler screen and substantially all of the particles pass through an 8 mesh Tyler screen with up to 20 parts of a solid granular carbonaceous permanent binder selected from pitch asphalt and mixtures thereof so that said binder contributes at least 1% by weight of the carbon in the granular product and with a temporary binder system comprising 15 to 15 parts by weight of water and at least 0-8 parts of starch, clay, molasses, asphalt or sulphite liquors or mixtures thereof emulsified, suspended, dispersed or dissolved therein; (B) agglomerating the mixed components of step A into pellets above # inch in diameter by means of a substantially pressureless operation carried out preferably at ambient temperatures and such that the required amount of water to produce pellets is maintained and (C) devolatilizing the pellets so formed in a substantially non-oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature between 650‹ and 1100‹ C.
