Abstract
1,194,962. Making metallurgical coke. GREAT LAKES CARBON CORP. 8 April, 1968 [12 April, 1967], No. 16884/68. Heading C5E. Metallurgical coke is made by a two-stage heating process with intermediate pressing and shaping similar to that described in Specification 1,119,869, but the particulate material is mixed with a plasticizing agent which is neither vaporizable nor decomposable below 490 F., e.g. the furfural extract of heavy lubricating oils, asphalt, anthracene oil, coal tar, thermal tar, and pitch (petroleum or coal tar) in amounts of 1 to 8% b.w. of the particulate material. This enables lower temperatures to be employed in the first stage, namely, from 300 F. upwards to one below the fusion temperature of the particles. Fusible coal may be used alone, i.e. without coke, as the particulate material, and the optional inert material includes oxidized raw petroleum coke and ores. The particulate material and the plasticizer may be separately heated before mixing (see Figs. 1 and 2, not shown), or mixed before being heated (see Fig. 3, not shown). Volatile matter contents (by weight) of the particulate materials are: coal alone, 15 to 20%; coal with coke, 15 to 45%; coke alone (excluding water) 10 to 20%; coke with coal, 8 to 20%. Heating in the first stage may be rapid, e.g. 1 second where a coal/coke mix is employed, and carbonization of the shaped bodies is preferably effected within 8 hours. The pressing stage produces a shaped body having an apparent density of at least 0À85 g/c.c. and a porosity not greater than 37%.
