Abstract
954,710. Cable spacers. BRITISH INSU LATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. March 11, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 9266/62. Heading H2C. A spacer for bundled conductors comprises two or more rings, each carrying an arm which terminates in a conductor clamp, the rings being resiliently maintained in axial alignment and restrained from axial rotation relative to each other, the axes of the clamps being parallel to one another but at right angles to the axis of the rings. As shown, a spacer for a cable having three component conductors comprises three rings 1, 2, 3 spaced apart by neoprene washers 7 and 8 mounted on a spindle 4 which also carries end-plates 9 and 10 spaced from rings 1 and 3 by neoprene washers 11 and 12. Projecting from the rings are arms 13, 14, 15 carrying conductor clamps 16, 17, 18. The friction grip between the neoprene washers and the rings is such that any relative rotation of the rings about the spindle 4 is accommodated by distortion of the washers. Since a small clearance is left around the spindle slight movement in a plane containing the arm and the spindle axis is permitted, this again is accommodated by distortion of the washers. Any movement perpendicular to the conductor is limited by bell-mouthing each end of the clamp, 19, 20 (Fig. 2, not shown), or by providing a layer of resilient material between the conductor and the embracing wall of the clamp. Ina further embodiment the spindle may have a sleeve or covering of resilient material, each ring being secured to this resilient sleeve by bonding, cementing, friction, or by making the spindle and ring of non-circular cross-section. To produce a good friction grip between the ring and the resilient sleeve each ring may be split diametrically or radially into two or more parts which are screwed together. The rings may comprise an outer and an inner rigid ring united by an intervening ring of resilient material, the inner rings may also be coupled to or integral with each other and form a common support with or without a spindle. A natural or synthetic rubber composition may be used as resilient material. Spacers for bundles of four conductors and two conductors are also shown.
