Abstract
1,156,999. Insulators. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 1 Dec., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 54126/66. Heading H2C. An insulator comprises a rod 1 of resinbonded, high tensile strength fibres, a part between its end-fittings 2, 3 being enclosed in a covering built up of a plurality of ceramic or vitreous tubular bodies 4 and nylon washers 5, with contiguous surfaces designed to restrict their relative rotation. In the embodiment shown, four equally spaced radial channels 6 in the end faces of tubular bodies 4 and similar channels 14 in endfittings 2, 3, co-operate with radial ribs 11 on washers 5, silicon rubber impregnant 15 filling spaces between the adhesively coated contiguous surfaces to restrict rotation. Flanges 16 on tubular bodies 4 serve as sheds to provide an increased surface leakage path across the insulator. In other embodiments, rotation is avoided without channels and ribs by inclining the end faces of the tubular bodies 4 at an angle to the axis of the insulator and sheds may also be provided by, for example, projections on the washers.
