Abstract

950,460. Centrifugal separators. GOODENOUGH PUMPS Ltd., P. J. THACKRAY, and D. E. LAWRANCE. Feb. 27, 1961 [March 21, 1960], No. 9955/60. Heading B2P. The solid components of sewage are centrifugally separated from the liquid ones by feeding the sewage through an inlet pipe 29 to a rotating bowl 11, the solids being deposited on the inner peripheral wall of the bowl and the liquids flowing axially of the bowl until they overflow its edge. The bowl 11 is carried by a spindle 17 driven by belts 24 from an electric motor 25 and has a lip 13 at its upper end forming a weir and a detachable lining 16 which may be of flexible material, e.g. waterproofed paper, hessian or plastic and against which the solids accumulate. The sewage to be treated is directed from the inlet 29 against a central conical part 12 of the bowl and the separated liquid passes over the lip 13 as a fine spray into the space between the bowl and a surrounding casing 26 where it may be purified by being injected with jets of air under pressure issuing from holes 32 in a tubular ring 31 supplied with compressed air ; the aerated liquid being finally discharged to a contact tank through an outlet 34 in the bottom of the casing. The casing 26 is supported from pedestals 37 by spring-loaded suspension rods 36. The bowl may be stopped when required by a brake band 38 engageable with a wheel 39 on the spindle 17 and operable through lever 42, arm 43 and rod 44 by a handle 45. In operation, when a sufficient mass of solids has accumulated, the cover 28 of the casing 26 and the lip 13 are removed and the lining 16 with the accumulated solids are removed and a new lining inserted.
