Abstract

A mixture of calcium carbonate, an organic carboxylic acid with a functional group other than the carboxyl attached either to the " carboxyl " carbon atom or a carbon atom adjacent thereto and a basic compound capable of forming the carboxylic acid salt or salts of said basic compound and the carboxylic acid and water of sufficient quantity to produce no less than a 65% solids mixture is worked in a Hercules Hi-Shear Viscometer at room temperature and 4540 sec.-1 until the viscosity is not in excess of about 1 poise. Acids exemplified are: citric, diglycolic hemimellitic and pyruvic. Basic compounds are sodium hydroxide, sodium fluoride and diethanolamine.
