Abstract

Mixed esters of glycerol are prepared by esterifying glycerol with a C8-22 fatty acid and lactic acid at a fatty acid:lactic acid molar ratio of not less than 1:0,62 in the presence of CaO as catalyst. Preferred reactant ratios of fatty acid:glycerol:lactic acid which are used are 1,0:0,6-1,0 : not more than 0,62. Calcium ions present in the product are preferably removed, e.g. by precipitation as a calcium soap followed by filtration, or by treatment with ion-exchange resins, acid activated clays, acid-treated carbon blacks, or montmorillonites.
