Abstract
<PICT:0945411/C3/1> A process for manufacturing a grooved plate to form an abutment to absorb the axial thrust of a rotating shaft includes the steps of lapping a metal plate, electrolytically depositing an antifriction metal, e.g. silver, on the lapped surface and lapping the surface of the deposit. The grooves may be formed by chemically or electrochemically removing the electrodeposit or by masking their locations with synthetic resin while electrodepositing the metal. The surface of the plate and electrodeposit may be other than plane, e.g. conical, and the grooves may vary in depth along their lengths. Fig. 6 shows grooves 8 in an electrolytic deposit 11 of antifriction metal lapped to the level Z. Before depositing the antifriction metal, a preliminary layer of metal may be deposited on the plate and the preliminary layer may be lapped. For example, an Al alloy plate has chemically deposited Zn, electrodeposited Cu and electrodeposited Ag or Ni. Groove depths of 0.01 to 0.06 mm. are specified.
