Abstract

1276665 Abrading DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 10 March 1970 [10 March 1969] 12450/69 Heading B3D [Also in Division C7] A method of producing a lap comprises providing a metal former with a flat surface and electro-depositing a uniformly thick layer of metal softer than that of the former on the surface of the former. The metal of the former may be stainless steel or brass, and the softer material may be of copper, tin, indium or lead electro-deposited to a thickness of 0À002 to 0À003 inch. In carrying out the method, the former 1 is machined to size and its flat working face 3 is provided with a spiral groove, or two series of parallel grooves at right-angles to one another, and a central recess 5. The former is mounted on shaft 17, which acts as a cathode, and is positioned within a polythene casing 7. A guard ring 11 of methyl methacrylate is carried by dowels 13 and the assembly placed in a bath 21 containing an electrolyte 19 and an anode 23 whereby the softer metal is deposited on the face 3 as the assembly is rotated. The guard ring prevents build up of the softer metal at the edge of the surface 3.
