Abstract
706,264. Plain bearings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Aug. 8, 1952 [Aug. 21, 1951], No. 19723/51. Class 12(1) A journal bearing which may have a steel backing, has grooves 2 machined in its bronze shell 1 which are filled by electro-deposition with soft antifriction metal 4, and is then machined so that the area ratio of the hard metal 3 to the soft metal 4 is in the order of 1:4, the shell and soft metal then being covered with a thin coating of electro-deposited soft antifriction metal. In a modification, the metal 4 is pressed or otherwise machined in the shaped shell or the flat strip which is formed into the shell. It is stated that in operation the initial uniform covering of soft metal wears first where it coats the ridges of hard metal, but the soft metal in the grooves spreads out as a film over the ridges and forms in time a series of narrow inclined planes favourable to the development of high load carrying oil films.
