Abstract

A lubricating oil composition is prepared by oxidizing a petroleum lubricating oil, e.g. by blowing air through it at an elevated temperature, neutralizing the oxidized oil with a metallic base and dissolving a small proportion of a metal alkyl phenate and/or sulphurized metal alkyl phenate in the neutralized product. In examples, the base used is barium hydroxide and phenates used are barium octyl phenate and barium dodecyl phenate.
