Abstract

Mineral and other lubricating oils are improved in oiliness and resistance to oxidation by adding a small proportion of an ester the alcoholic component of which contains at least one aromatic ring having a sulphur, selenium, or tellurium atom directly attached thereto, 0,01--5,0 per cent is a suitable proportion. The atom may be attached in the mono-sulphide, disulphide, or mercaptan form. The alcoholic component may be an aromatic alcohol or phenol or an aralkyl alcohol; it may be mono- or polyhydric. The ring may be benzene, naphthalene, or anthracene; it may contain alkyl, amino and hydroxyl groups. The acidic component of the ester may contain a like sulpho, seleno-, or telluro-aromatic ring, and may be mono-or polybasic. In an example, 0,5 per cent of an acetic acid ester of di-tertiary dibutyl diphenyl sulphide is added to a hydrocarbon lubricating oil.
