Abstract
In a method of purifying phosphorus or arsenic the element is volatilized and the resulting vapour passed through a zone maintained at 850 DEG C. or more. The vapour of phosphorus or arsenic may be admixed with hydrogen or an inert gas, e.g. argon or helium before passage through the heated zone. In examples the volatilized phosphorus or arsenic is passed through a zone which may be packed with quartz beads or wool and heated to a temperature between 850 DEG and 1000 DEG C. The resulting pure phosphorus or arsenic may be converted into phosphides or arsenides of metals such as gallium, aluminium, zinc and indium or of nonmetals such as boron; mixed metal phosphides, e.g. zinc germanium phosphide may also be made from the pure phosphorus obtained by the above method.ALSO:In a method of purifying arsenic the element is volatilized and the resulting vapour passed through a zone maintained at 850 DEG C. or more. The arsenic vapour may be admixed with hydrogen or an inert gas, e.g. argon or helium before passage through the heated zone. In examples the volatilized arsenic is passed through a zone which may be packed with quartz beads or wool and heated to a temperature between 850 DEG C. and 1000 DEG C. The resulting pure arsenic may be converted into arsenides of metals such as gallium, aluminium, zinc and indium or of non-metals such as boron.
