Abstract

An alcoholic or aqueous alcoholic solution of a basic dyestuff also containing the condensation product of a hydroxydiaryl sulphone, formaldehyde and a hydroxy aromatic carboxylic acid or an aryloxy fatty acid, is used as an ink in the production of flexographic prints. There may also be present in the condensation product, a hydrocarbon compound having at least one benzene ring and having at least one hydrogen atom in the benzene ring replaced by a hydroxyl group. Suitable condensation products are described in German Specification 693,770 and those also containing the hydroxylated hydrocarbon compound are described in Specification 939,596. Examples are given of suitable compositions, which may also contain ethyl cellulose or cyclohexanone-formaldehyde resin or oil-modified alkyd, and which are used to print paper, aluminium foil, polyethylene, or cellulose hydrate. The resins used in the examples, other than the resins of Specification 939,596 are prepared from: (a) 250 parts 4,41-dihydroxydiphenyl sulphone, 276 parts salicylic acid and 200 parts formaldehyde in the presence of H2SO4, (b) above ingredients in ratio 250:552:400 in the presence of HCl, (c) as (b) in ratio 250:69:100 in the presence of toluene sulphonic acid, (d) as (a) with salicylic replaced by 4-hydroxybenzoic or a mixture of 2- and 4-hydroxybenzoic acids.
