Abstract

A grease of the type derived from a base oil (mineral or synthetic) and a lithium soap of a hydroxy-substituted fatty acid is prepared by heating the grease-forming mixture to a maximum grease-forming temperature, wherein free glycerol is added at or near the said maximum temperature within the range 375 DEG -425 DEG F. An antioxidant may also be added within this temperature range, preferably before the glycerol. The fatty acid may be 12-hydroxy stearic acid, and the antioxidant may be a phenolic or phosphorus and/or nitrogen containing compound. Antioxidants mentioned include phenyl-b -naphthylamine, phenothiazine and alkyl-substituted phenothiazine, 2,6-tertiary butyl-4-methyl phenol, dioctyl diphenylamine, alkyl substituted bisphenols, cadmium and zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates, and metal dithiocarbamates. Other additives mentioned are zinc and lead naphthenates and molybdenum disulphide. The grease preparation is described in detail.
