Abstract
A process for the polymerization of ethylene at high pressure comprises passing ethylene, optionally together with a copolymerizable monomer, and a free radical generating polymerization initiator at the inlet of a tubular reactor so that polymerization occurs in the reactor, and injecting ethylene, optionally together with copolymerizable monomer, and a free radical generating polymerization initiator at at least one point along the length of the reactor, the temperature of the ethylene, optional comonomer and initiator that is injected being below the temperature in the reactor where injection takes place. The copolymerizable monomer may be another olefin or a vinyl compound. The initiator may be hydrogen peroxide, diethyl peroxide, di-t.-butyl peroxide, butyryl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, alkyl hydroperoxides, diperoxy dicarbonate esters, t.-butyl perbenzoate, potassium persulphate, azo diisobutyronitrile, benzalazine or acetone oxime, or mixtures, e.g. of lauroyl and t.-butyl peroxides. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of modifiers, e.g. ethane, propane, n-butane, isopentane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, toluene, xylene, t.-butyl alcohol, acetone, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and phenolic compounds, which may be added with the injected ethylene if desired. The example describes the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of propane and a mixture of lauroyl and t.-butyl peroxides with the injection of reactants at one and two points along the length of the reactor. The polymers may be made into films.
