Abstract
Distillable liquid homo- or copolymers consisting of, or comprising, halogen-free vinyl esters, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters, are made by polymerizing the monomeric mixture in the gaseous state, at a pressure of up to 8 atmospheres and a temperature of 200-300 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst which is gaseous at the polymerization temperature. Specified esters are vinyl formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and benzoate, methyl, ethyl, or propyl acrylate, and methyl, ethyl, propyl, or butyl methacrylate. Catalysts mentioned are di-t.-butyl peroxide, di-t.-amyl peroxide, t.-butyl-pentamethylethyl peroxide, and t.-butyl hydroperoxide. The polymers may be used as solvents and plasticizers, e.g. for vinyl chloride polymers.ALSO:Distillable liquid homopolymers, e.g. having a degree of polymerization between 2 and 6, and copolymers consisting of one or more halogen-free vinyl esters, acrylic or methacrylic acid esters are made by polymerizing the monomeric mixture in the gaseous state, at a pressure up to 8 atmospheres and a temperature of 200-300 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst which is gaseous at the polymerization temperature. Specified esters are vinyl formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and benzoate, methyl, ethyl, or propyl acrylate, and methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl methacrylate. Catalysts mentioned are di-t-butyl peroxide, di-t-amyl peroxide, t-butyl-pentamethyl-ethyl peroxide and t-butyl hydroperoxide. The polymers may be used as solvents and plasticizers, e.g. for vinyl chloride polymers.
