Abstract
1,2 - Dichloro - 1,2 - difluoroethylene or 1,1 - dichloro-2,2-difluoroethylene is polymerized by heat in the presence of oxygen or a per-compound, e.g. benzoyl and lauroyl peroxides, diethyl peroxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide and ammonium, sodium or potassium persulphates. Interpolymers may be made with one or more of vinyl acetate, chloride and fluoride; acrylic and methacrylic acids and their esters, anhydrides, amides and nitriles; styrene, ethylene, propylene, isobutylene; butadiene, chloroprene, isoprene; vinylidene chloride and fluoride; tetrafluoroethylene, trichlorofluoroethylene. Polymerization may be effected in bulk, solution or emulsion and in the presence of light. Elevated pressure may be used. The products may be combined with or prepared in the presence of plasticisers, fillers, pigments, dyes, natural or synthetic resins and stabilizers. They may be formed into films and fibres which may be oriented and set by heat treatment. Solutions, e.g. in carbon tetrachloride, may be used for coating wires, coils, glass fibres, bentonite films, carbon, ceramics and mica. Aqueous dispersions may be prepared from such solutions.
