Abstract

Melt-spun yarns or tows are drawn between a set of feed rolls and a set of draw rolls rotating at a higher peripheral speed, at least one feed roll being heated and a heating zone being provided between the feed rolls and draw rolls. Specified materials include polyesters, especially condensation products of ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid, with a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids, terephthalic acid and 5-(sodium sulpho)-isophthalic acid, or terephthalic acid and small amount of another dibasic acid (e.g. sebacic or adipic acid), and polyesters of terephthalic acid with glycols other than ethylene glycol, polyolefins, especially stereo-regular polypropylene, acrylonitrile polymers, and polyamides, especially polyhexamethylene adipamide. Preferably, one heated feed roll only is used, associated with a skewed idler roll, and the heating zone comprises a heated metal plate. In preferred methods:- (1) melt-spun polyester yarns of drawn denier from 20-500 and tenacity greater than 6 g./denier are made, using a feed roll temperature of 75 DEG -90 DEG C. (especially 80 DEG -85 DEG C.) and a heating zone temperature of 160 DEG -200 DEG C. (especially 185 DEG -195 DEG C.), (2) melt-spun polyester yarns of drawn denier from 500-2,000 and tenacity greater than 6 g./denier are made, using a feed roll temperature of 60 DEG -75 DEG C. (especially 65 DEG -70 DEG C.) and a heating zone temperature of 160 DEG -200 DEG C. (especially 185 DEG -195 DEG C.), (3) melt-spun polyester yarns of tenacity less than 6 g./denier are made using a feed roll temperature of 90 DEG -100 DEG C. and a heating zone temperature of 160 DEG -180 DEG C. (especially 170 DEG -175 DEG C.), (4) melt-spun yarns of stereo-regular polyolefines of drawn denier from 20-500 are made using a feed roll temperature of 75 DEG -90 DEG C. (especially 80 DEG -85 DEG C.), and a heating zone temperature of 135 DEG -145 DEG C., (5) melt-spun yarns of stereoregular polyolefines of drawn denier from 500-2,000 are made using a feed roll temperature of 60 DEG -75 DEG C. (especially 65 DEG -70 DEG C.), and a heating zone temperature of 135 DEG -154 DEG C. The process of the invention enables higher drawing speeds to be used than is otherwise possible.
