Abstract

Artificial or naturally occurring polymeric materials capable of being wound up in roll form are irradiated with a beam of high energy radiation on the surface of a rotating roll comprising a plurality of layers of said structure while the number of layers of said structure on said roll is continuously changing. The irradiated structure, which may be cooled, may be treated by the beam transversely of the roll and localized on a line substantially coincident with the line at which the material is tangential to the roll. The materials, which may be irradiated in the form of films, filaments, fabrics, sheets, yarns and ribbons, are generally about 0.01 inches thick and comprise such substances as rubber hydrochloride, polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polyamides such as polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaproamide, polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene sebacate, polyvinylidene chloride, regenerated cellulose, natural silk, cotton and wool.ALSO:Artificial or naturally occurring polymeric materials capable of being wound up in roll form are irradiated, to produce changes in chemical and physical structure, with a beam of high energy radiation on the surface of a rotating roll comprising a plurality of layers of said structure while the number of layers of the material on the roll is continuously changing. The material, which may be cooled, may be treated by the beam transversely of the roll and localized on a line substantially coincident with the line at which the material is tangential to the roll. The materials, which may be irradiated in the form of films, filaments, fabrics, sheets, yarns and ribbons, are generally about 0.01 inch thick and comprise such substances as polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, chlorinated polyethylene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, polyamides such as polyhexamethylene adipamide and polycaproamide, polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene sebacate, polyvinylidene chloride and regenerated cellulose.ALSO:Artificial or naturally occurring polymeric materials capable of being wound in roll form are irradiated within a beam of high energy radiation on the surface of a rotating roll comprising a plurality of layers of said structure while the number of layers of said structure on said roll is continuously changing. The irradiated structure which may be cooled, may be treated by the beam transversely of the roll and localised on a line substantially coincident with the line at which the material is tangential to the roll. The materials which may be irradiated in the form of films, filaments, fabrics, sheets, yarns and ribbons are generally about 0,01 inches thick and comprises rubber, hydrochloride.
