Abstract

933,007. Radio wave absorbers. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. May 17, 1961 [May 17, 1960], No. 18034/61. Class 40 (7). A device for absorbing radiated electromagnetic energy includes a lattice formed of resistive material extending in the direction of propagation of the incident energy with its interstices filled with a material whose dielectric constant # is greater than unity and increases in the direction of propagation in steps or continuously, e.g. exponentially. Preferably the permeability Á of the dielectric material is greater than that of air and is constant throughout the material but alternatively the permeability may increase continuously or in steps in the direction of propagation. In the latter case the ratio #Á/# may decrease in the direction of propagation but it is preferred to maintain said ratio constant at a value equal to #Á 0 /# 0 where Á 0 and # 0 are the permeability and dielectric constant of a vacuum. A lattice of absorbent material may be formed by providing such material on the surfaces 6a, 7a, 8a, normal to a wall 5 of blocks 6, 7, 8, of dielectric material which form successive layers in front of the wall. The surface of the area parallel to the wall of each block in a layer may be a fraction, e.g. a quarter, of the similar surface of a block in an adjacent layer farther from the wall so that the amount of absorbent material increases in steps in the path of incident energy. The resistance of the absorbent material may decrease in steps as the wall is approached and the dielectric material may be of foamed material, e.g. rubber, polystyrene or polyurethane, containing fillers so that the dielectric constant e and possibly the permeability Á increases in either discrete steps or continuously (e.g. exponentially) as the wall is approached. The increasing values of e and Á are stated to result in a shorter depth of the absorption path than in known " honeycomb " absorbers and the depth of the absorption path may be further shortened by placing a network of conductive fibres or wires on the surface of the wall.
