Abstract

A process for the flameless catalytic reaction of liquid sulphur-containing hydrocarbons, especially those containing non-vaporizable constituents, with amounts of oxygen insufficient for complete combustion, to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen, comprises spraying the initial material at a temperature of 800 DEG to 1200 DEG C.; preferably 900 DEG to 1100 DEG C., into a fluidized layer of a nickel catalyst and/or a sulphidic catalyst into which steam and/or CO2 necessary for the reaction is introduced as fluidization agent, and the gas rich in CO and H2 formed is reacted, for conversion of the hydrocarbons and carbon black contained therein, in a further fluidized layer in the presence of a nickel catalyst at a temperature at least 20 DEG C, and preferably at least 50 DEG C., below that of the first stage. Both the initial material and the fluidization agent may be preheated, e.g. to 300 DEG to 500 DEG C. and to 130 DEG to 600 DEG C. respectively. The oxygen and the steam and/or CO2 may be introduced separately, and 25% to 30% of the steam and/or CO2 may be introduced at the second stage. Pressures may be from normal to 50 atmospheres. In an example, a crude oil consisting of 85,6%C, 12,4%H, 2,6%S (per centages by weight) and a net calorific value of 9860 kg. cal. per kg. was sprayed into a fluidized catalyst of 0,2 mm. mean grain size containing 15% Ni and 10% Zr O2 (by weight) with oxygen and steam (preheated to 130 DEG C.) for gasification and fluidization at 1000 DEG C. The gas produced contained H2S, CH4, tar, atomized oil and carbon black, and was led into a second fluidized bed of the same catalyst and reacted with steam and CO2 at 930 DEG C. to form a gas comprising:-53,7% H2, 37,0% CO, 8,9% CO2, 0,1% CH4, 0,3% H2S.
