A process for the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide with the simultaneous production of a town's gas of high calorific value comprises gasifying coal with steam and oxygen at a pressure of from 10-40 atmospheres, washing the gas produced with ethanol or methanol at - 30‹ to -50‹C. to reduce its CO 2 content to from 0À5 to 10 per cent and to remove sulphur and cyanogen compounds, then subjecting the purified gas to a one-stage synthesis at the gasification pressure over an iron catalyst containing silicic acid, alkali and actuating metals such as copper, as described in Specifications 679,785 and 702,246, [both in Group III]. The synthesis tail gas is led through a condenser and oil washer to remove liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons, the exit gas having, for example, a composition in percentages by volume of H 4 53À4, CO 10À1. CH 4 28À7, CO 2 5À3, C 2 hydrocarbons 0À6 and N 2 1À9. This gas is made suitable for use as town's gas by reducing its content of CO by subjecting about one fourth of the gas to the water gas shift reaction, and mixing the converted gas with the unconverted part of the gas, the calorific value then being adjusted by admixture of a suitable proportion of the purified synthesis gas. The final gas has a composition in volume percentages of hydrogen 54À3, CO 7À9, CH 4 28À2, CO 2 7À2, C 2 hydrocarbons 0À6 and nitrogen 1À8, the calorific value being 523 B.Th.V's per cubic foot.
