Gaseous mixtures.-A hydrocarbon-containing gas, such as coal gas, coke oven gas, natural gas, or cracking gas, is partially oxidized with a restricted amount of an oxygen-containing gas to produce a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen for employment in the synthesis of methanol. According to the examples, (1) coke oven gas is freed from benzene and ethylene hydrocarbons and partially burnt with oxygen in the presence of nickel-coated magnesia at 1000‹ C.; (2) oil gas is mixed with steam and decomposed with oxygen over a catalyst consisting of alumina and nickel maintained at 900-1000‹ C.
