Abstract

The invention comprises: compounds of the general formula <FORM:0931776/IV(a)/1> (wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or a C1-4 alkyl group, and A represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon chain of 1-12 carbon atoms, which may be saturated or unsaturated and may be substituted by one or more C1-4 alkyl or hydroxy groups, or a diacyl group -CO-(CH2)n-CO-, where n is an integer from 1 to 12 inclusive, or an ether group -(CH2)x-O-(CH2)y-, where x and y are the same or different integers from 1 to 10 inclusive, or a cycloalkylene group); the preparation thereof by reacting a nitropyrazole of the general formula with a compound of the general formula <FORM:0931776/IV(a)/2> (wherein X represents a reactive ester residue), or (when R1 = R2) by reacting a nitropyrazole of formula (II) with a compound of the general formula X-A-X, or by nitrating a corresponding non-nitrated or mono-nitrated compound; and pharmaceutical compositions containing one or more compounds of formula (I) together with a signficant amount of a pharmaceutical carrier. Halides of formula (III) (X = Br or I) are prepared by condensing a nitropyrazole of the general formula <FORM:0931776/IV(a)/3> with a compound of the general formula <FORM:0931776/IV(a)/4> followed by fission of the product with hydrogen bromide or iodide. 1-(5-Bromopentyl)-4-nitropyrazole, prepared thus, is characterized by reaction with thiourea to form S-[5-(4-nitropyrazol-1-yl)- pentyl]-isothiourea, which is isolated as its picrate. 1,5Di-(pyrazol-1-yl)-n-pentane is prepared by heating the sodio-derivative of pyrazole with 1,5-dibromopentane. Its dipicrolonate is described. 1-(4-Nitropyrazol-1-yl)- 5-(pyrazol-1-yl)-n-pentane is prepared by condensing 1-(5-bromopentyl)-4-nitropyrazole with pyrazole. Its picrate is described. The pharmaceutical preparations, which have anti-protozoal activity, may be in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration, e.g. tablets, pills, dispersible powders, granules, emulsions, solutions, suspensions, syrups, elixirs or capsules.
