Abstract

A process for the treatment of fabric to render it substantially antistatic and soft and at least partially free from micro-organisms comprises impregnating the fabric with an aqueous solution of at least one cationic surface active agent and at least one organo-mercurial germicide. Specified cationic surface active agents are those of the formulae [R1 N R2 (R3)2] + X -, [(R1)2 NR2R3] + X - or <FORM:0930333/IV(a)/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl radical containing 10 to 22 carbon atoms and preferably 12-18, which may be derived from tallow, soybean or coconut oil, R2 is a methyl, ethyl or benzyl radical and R3 is a methyl or ethyl radical and X- is a chloride, bromide, sulphate or an alkyl (containing less than 5 carbon atoms) sulphate, phenyl sulphonate or benzyl sulphonate ion and also cationic surface active agents of the formula <FORM:0930333/IV(a)/2> where R1 is alkyl containing 12 carbon atoms and X- is chloride or bromide, of formula <FORM:0930333/IV(a)/3> where R1 is alkyl containing 10 or 22 carbon atoms or 10 to 22 carbon atoms derived from tallow, soybean or coconut fatty acid, R2 is an ethanol radical, R3 is methyl or benzyl and X is methyl sulphate, phenyl sulphonate, benzyl sulphonate or chloride, di-isobutyl phenoxy ethoxy ethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride2 N-(acyl colamino formyl-methyl) pyridinium chloride or a 50% aqueous solution of an alkyl benzyl triethyl ammonium chloride. Specified germicides are phenyl mercuric acetate, propionate, butyrate, chloride, bromide and iodide. Other ingredients used in the treatment solutions include, hexylene glycol, dyes, e.g. Hidacid Blue V, brighteners, e.g. "UVITEX" (Registered Trade Mark) and perfumes. The fabric may be dried after impregnation.ALSO:A fabric treating composition comprises an aqueous solution of a mixture of at least one organo mercurial germicide and at least one cationic surface-active agent having the formula [R1NR2(R3)2]+X-, [CR1)2NR2R3]+X- or <FORM:0930333/VI/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl radical containing 10 to 22 carbon atoms and preferably 12-18, which may be derived from tallow, soybean or coconut oil, R2 is a methyl, ethyl or benzyl radical, R3 is a methyl or ethyl radical and X- is chloride, bromide, sulphate or an alkyl (containing less than 5 carbon atoms) sulphate ion. Specified organo-mercurial germicides are phenyl mercuric acetate, propionate, butyrate, chloride, bromide or iodide. Other ingredients include hexylene glycol, sodium sulphate, dyes, brighteners and perfumes. The composition may also contain other cationic surface-active agents, e.g. <FORM:0930333/VI/2> where R1 is alkyl containing 12 carbon atoms, and X- is chloride or bromide, <FORM:0930333/VI/3> where R1 is alkyl containing 10 or 22 carbon atoms or 10-22 carbon atoms derived from tallow, soybean or coconut fatty acid, R2 is an ethanol radical, R3 is methyl or benzyl and X is methyl sulphate, phenyl sulphonate, benzyl sulphonate or chloride, di-isobutyl phenoxy ethoxy-ethyl dimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, N-(acyl colamino formyl-methyl) pyridinium chloride or a 50% aqueous solution of an alkyl benzyl triethyl ammonium chloride.
