A pig iron mixer has an elliptical internal cross-section, a refractory lining 1, and stiffening rings 3 the upper portions of which are elliptical and the lower parts of which are circular and are mounted on bearing rollers 4. Swinging of the mixer about its longitudinal axis is effected by means of a driving rod hinged to a projection 6 on the middle stiffening ring. A charging opening 8 is positioned off the minor axis of the ellipse which is normally vertical.
