[Also in Group XXII] A lubricating device for shafts &c., particularly articulated shafts in rolling mills comprises a weight 23 inside the shaft 1, which remains stationary as the shaft rotates, thus driving, through a spindle 22, gearing 22a, 24, 25 and eccentrics 26, lubricant feed pistons 29 mounted in the shaft and rotating therewith so as to force grease from a reservoir 5, and a multi-stage change-speed gear 55, 58, 59 which is adjustable externally of the shaft to vary the transmission ratio between the weight and the grease pumps. The change-speed gear comprises a centrally-mounted stepped gear-wheel 55 and a series of gear-wheels such as 58, 59, each having two sets of gear teeth, spaced around it on an eccentric sleeve 54, so that by rotation of the sleeve any one of the series 58, 59 may be brought into engagement with the stepped wheel and gear teeth 50a on a sleeve 50 secured to the weight.
