Abstract
Alkali-metal zirconium silicates are prepared by reacting zirconium silicate, or natural materials containing zirconium silicate, with an alkali metal hydroxide, in the presence of water, at elevated pressure, and a temperature above 170 DEG C and preferably above 200 DEG C. The alkali metal hydroxide is preferably used in the form of a 30% to 75% by weight solution. 4 to 6 mols of sodium hydroxide may be employed for each mol of zirconium silicate. The reaction mixture may be diluted with water after the reaction has been completed and the alkalimetal zirconium silicate filtered off. The filtrate may be concentrated to the desired alkali metal hydroxide content and used again.
