Abstract
3-(Hydanto-51-yl-methyl)-indole is prepared by heating b -(2-carboxy-indolyl-(3))-a -amino-propionic acid and urea in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or alkaline earth metal hydroxide to form b -(2-carboxy-indolyl-(3))-a -uraminopropionic acid, and heating this intermediate product with mineral acid, preferably in the presence of a C1-3 aliphatic alcohol. If desired the final product may be hydrolysed to tryptophan. 2 - Carboxy-3-(hydanto-51-yl-methyl)-indole, formed as by-product during the mineral acid treatment of the intermediate product, may be decarboxylated by heating to 290 DEG C. in liquid paraffin. Alternatively, the above byproduct may be converted into the intermediate compound by heating with 2 moles of aqueous caustic soda, or may be converted into starting material by heating with 6 moles of aqueous caustic soda. The b - (2-carboxy-indolyl-(3)-a -aminopropionic acid starting material is preferably prepared by the process of Specification 903,954.
