Abstract
922,532. Travelling wave tubes. MULLARD Ltd. Feb. 8, 1960 [March 20, 1959], No. 9756/59. Class 39 (1). A travelling wave tube has a magnetic focusing system comprising a main solenoid 1, Fig. 2, or permanent magnet to produce a longitudinal magnetic field and an auxiliary coil or coils 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, providing an auxiliary focusing field substantially perpendicular to the main field so that the resulting field can be coaxially aligned with the travelling wave tube. There may be a single pair of coils intersecting the axis or two pairs of coils 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B arranged around the axis perpendicularly to one another. One coil of the pair or one coil of one pair can be omitted; in these cases the remaining coil or coil of the pair can be rotated as one of the adjustments. The other adjustment is separate variation of the current in each coil or each pair of coils by variable resistances in series with the coils. The auxiliary coils may be inside the solenoid. If a permanent magnet is used the magnetic yokes have a shielding effect with respect to the correcting field so the auxiliary coils are located within the yoke and magnet system.
