Abstract
852,181. Travelliug wave tubes. MULLARD Ltd. July 16, 1959, No. 24496/59. Class 39(1). The magnetic focusing system of a travelling wave tube comprises two coaxial concentric sets of magnetic rings energised by a common magnet ; the rings straighten the field i.e. make it axial at all points. The inner set of magnetic rings A are of Á metal and have small remnant magnetism, while the outer set B are of mild steel and have a high saturation value. The outer set B may be evenly spaced but are preferably unevenly spaced, as shown, to make the axial field as even as possible, and are disposed between the polepieces P. The inner set A can be incorporated into a subassembly with a travelling wave tube as in Specification 845,000 the outer set B forming a separate subassembly with the magnet. Additional magnetic pole-pieces between the ends of the set B may be used to give the field reversals necessary to set up a periodic focusing system.
