Abstract

921,686. Turbines. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Jan. 17, 1962 [Jan. 25, 1961], No. 2949/61. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXVIII] The intercell walls 2 of the self-driving cell rings 1 of a pressure exchanger are curved over a portion 3 adjacent the inlet port of a scavenging stage and in the direction of gas flow, thereby providing negative reaction blading, i.e. the blades form cells of increasing crosssectional area in the direction of gas flow. As shown, the curved portion 3 is adjacent the high pressure inlet port 9 provided in an end plate 3 and supplied with high pressure gas, e.g. air, through a duct 12 which is itself supplied with high pressure air through an outlet port 7 cut in an end plate 4. This air is cooled in a hot pan 11 of a heat exchanger having a cold pan 13 and is then supplemented with high pressure air admitted through a duct 16. Air retained by the cells after passing ports 7, 9 is expanded through a low pressure scavenging outlet port 8 and ambient air is admitted through a port 6 and on impinging against the curved portion 3 of the cell walls assists rotation thereof.
