[Also in Group XXXVI] A gas-or oil-filled pipe cable is drawn from a drying and impregnating tank 1<SP>1</SP> (see Group XXXVI), through a tube 3 containing an inert gas, thence past taping heads 4, and finally via a hauling device 5, before being wound on to a reel mounted on stand 8. The taping heads 4, together with tube 3, and the hauling device 5, are carried on a trolley 6 running on rails 7 so that the resulting unit may be placed in front of any of several impregnating tanks 1<SP>11</SP>, 1<SP>111</SP>, so that taping of one core may take place simultaneously with the drying and impregnation of others. The number of heads on the taping machine is preferably restricted to three, or four (including one spare), to limit the length of the machine. The take-up stand 8 for each tank may be replaced by a trolley, separate from that of the taping machine, which is movable between the tanks and may also act as a vehicle for transporting the core throughout the works. The taping heads 4 may apply: (a) two screening tapes made of a metallized synthetic material which are interposed one between the other helically, for example in a left-handed direction; (b) a copper tape and a tape made of metallized synthetic material which are interposed one between the other and wound helically; for example in a right-handed direction; and (c) one or two skid wires, in the latter case interposed one between the other, wound helically, for example in the left-hand direction.
