Abstract

982,069. Cable reels; taking up slack in electric cables. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Oct. 1, 1963 [Oct. 1, 1962], No. 37200/62. Headings B8B and B8M. The inner end of an electric cable 2 wound on drum 1 is connected at pulley wheel 8 to one end of an electrical conductive element or tape 9 the other end of which is connected to an electrical terminal 10 and which, as the drum rotates on support 7 to wind or unwind the cable, respectively coils or uncoils. In one example (Fig. 1) the tape passes around pulleys 11 on arms 12 and 13, one end of each arm being pivoted to support 7 while each other end is connected to a lever 16, Fig. 2 (not shown) rotatable about axle 3. When the tape unwinds from pulley 8, the slack is taken up by springs 19 causing lever 16 to rotate and thus causing arms 12 and 13 to be pulled away from each other. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, tape 9 forms a spiral guided by spool 20, each turn of which increases in diameter as the drum unwinds. A counterbalance weight 21, Fig. 1, or springs may be used to rewind the cable. The tape has copper conductors embedded in thin polythene insulation.
